Free health screening at FLOW promenade today
People who are interested in getting free medical screening can go to the FLOW promenade on Halifax Street, Kingstown today where PraxTherapy, in collaboration with Lions Club South and FLOW are hosting a health and wellness fair under the “Movember” initiative.
The health fair runs from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and interested persons can get screened and consult with medical professionals for free.
Services include blood sugar testing, blood pressure screening, medical check-ups, weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) checks, EKG (electrocardiogram) testing, mental wellness screening, and venipuncture prostate specimen antigen (PSA) tests.
Explaining, Chief Executive Officer of PraxTherapy Dr. Enyinne Williams, said “Movember” is an annual event held during November where people, particularly men, grow moustaches to raise funds and awareness around men’s health issues like prostate cancer, testicular cancer, men’s mental health and suicide prevention. The name is a portmanteau of “mo” (the Australian slang for moustache) and “November”. While growing a “mo” is the most well-known aspect, participants also raise money and awareness through other activities.
Dr. Williams, a forensic psychiatrist, runs a programme at His Majesty’s Prison (HMP), which is spearheaded by the Ministry of National Security, through the Ministry of Legal Affairs, and is aimed at engaging prisoners with mental health issues in as part of rehabilitation efforts and improving mental health at HMP.
She decided to introduce “Movember” and collaborate to do the health fair after reviewing statistics related to cancer in St Vincent and Grenadines (SVG), specifically prostrate cancer.
The opening speech and event kick-off is slated to begin at 11:15 a.m., and there will also be interactive trivia and raffle draws at 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m, and a grand prize draw at 4:45 p.m. A wellness talk on “Men’s Mental and Emotional Health” by Kesley Cambridge will be held at 1:00 p.m. while a men’s mental health panel, and question and answer segment will be held at 3:00 p.m. The health booths where the various screenings will be done will be open throughout the day (11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.).
Dr. Williams is encouraging people to come out and take advantage of the free screening since it is important to know their status when it comes to health issues. She said that knowing is ensuring that treatment is obtained which, in many cases, can save your life.
She is also hoping to open a halfway house in SVG that will provide temporary housing, medication management, therapy, and support to former prisoners that have mental health issues.
The move, according to Dr. Williams, is to ensure that people who leave Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) re-enter society safely and with dignity.
As a way of helping to fund the half way house, Dr. Williams has entered the “Fab Over 40 contest”, an annual online competition for women aged 40 and over, with the winner appearing on the cover of NewBeauty Magazine, and winning $40,000.
The contest is also a fundraiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation in the United States, with a majority of funds raised going to support breast cancer research and survivors.
Voting is a key part of the competition, with free daily votes and opportunities to make paid donations, where $1 equals one vote.
Dr. Williams is appealing to Vincentians and supporters worldwide to vote since if she wins, the prize money will go towards making the halfway house in SVG a reality.
