Women’s position in world news still insignificant, global study finds
A new global study has found that women do not hold a very significant position in world news.
The findings were released on Thursday, September, 3,2025 as the preliminary findings of the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) report, 2025.
The results were released during an online news conference which was organized by UN Women.
The full report is expected to be released on November 25, 2025.
This year’s findings reveal that women account for only 26% of news subjects and sources around the world.
The report also looked at gender- based violence, which affects half of the world’s population.
However, the findings show that only 2 in 100 stories highlight the plight of gender-based violence.
Journalism that counters gender stereotypes is now said to be at it lowest level in the past 30 years.
“Media reflects reality and is essential for democracy and a fair and equal world for all women and girls.
“But when women are missing, democracy is incomplete,” said Kirsi Madi, the Deputy Executive Director of UN Women.
Speaking at Thursday’s launch, Madi said the findings are both a wake up call and also a call to action.
Madi also expressed the view that without women voices, there is no full story. No fair democracy, no lasting security and no shared future.
The GMMP report was produced by the International Communication Rights Organization WACC, with support from UN Women.
