Crime is everyone’s Responsibility
EDITOR: Crime is everyone’s responsibility.
The rise in crimes, mainly homicide, gives us no joy and is something that ought to concern each one of us.
Far too often we politicize it and play the blame game, when in fact we ought not too.
SVG still remains a safe place and most, if not, all the homicide are targetted.
Very seldom there are wild shooting, but instead most of these killings are professionally done.
There are many causes for this rise in crimes, such as: Living in the last days as the Bible says that men’s love would grow cold. The wickedness of men’s heart.
The list can go on, including revenge and greed and unforgivingness. However, as we would realize that some of these crimes are because of the failure of the home. This writer had on previous occasions, written about the causes and so there is no need to discuss it again, but simply to encourage us of our responsibility and to encourage us to be part of the solution which we know does not lie in the hands of the politicians, rather all of us have a role to play.
Some of the responsibilities that we have as a people to assist in the reduction of crime are: to have a healthy home, where there is discipline, love, communication and most importantly, Christ as the head of the home. For when the home does not offer the aforementioned, it then can become a breeding ground for criminals.
Rebuilding a strong neighbourhood, where love and respect is demonstrated in the community. The neighbourhood must become a breeding ground for principles and camaraderie where everyone feels appreciated and comfortable.
These are sadly are missing in these times.
We as adults ought to become role models. In doing so, it means that we ought to show example of care, kindness, love and respect. Our young men and women ought to be able to look up to as adults for guidance, trust and counselling. But, honestly, this is not seen amongst a large majority of us as adults.
Sometimes, there are those who are willing to help, but are afraid to do so, because of the abuse that might be meted out by the parents or even the individuals themselves. This is because we have become selfish and sometimes proud.
But if we as a people would seek to see each other as one, and realize that no one is better than us, nor are we better than anyone, then we would develop the right attitude towards each other and so we can communicate freely even to the younger ones.
Christ, not religion ought to become the main person in our family. We need to get back the righteous way of life and spend time with our family. We ought to give Christ a place in our lives and homes. This would require consistent prayer for and with our families. So, it ought to start with us doing so and then our young ones would come to appreciate Christ.
It is my prayer that as a nation, the Christians would turn from their wicked ways, seek God’s face and humble themselves as 2 Chronicles 7: 4 tells us.
May God bless us all.
