Never mind the cost, we invite you to come to the Southern Grenadines

EDITOR: The invitations come from various sources. Friends and family say, “come and spend some time with us.” The church says, “we have a convocation.” The business place says, “take advantage of our special.” The employer says, “we have a company meeting.” The bank says, “We would like you to come in person.”

The workers’ union expects us to attend all the celebratory functions. Government offices offer services available only on mainland St. Vincent and expect us to access them seamlessly. The wedding invitation says, “we request the honour of your presence.” But what does it cost residents of the Southern Grenadines to respond positively?

People leaving North Leeward, North Windward and Bequia can reasonably leave their homes in the morning, travel to Kingstown and return in the Afternoon. This is not usually so for residents of the Southern Grenadines. The airline leaves AIA in the morning and returns in the afternoon. It is claimed that they cater for tourists and locals wanting to visit the Southern Grenadines, and there is apparently no consideration for those of us who want to go to Kingstown for the day. We are just a Day Tour destination for mainland St. Vincent and the neighbouring Eastern Caribbean islands. We are told that there are no scheduled flights, only shared charters.

While there is improved travel by boat, there needs to be better coordination so that those leaving the Southern Grenadines in the morning can arrive in Kingstown early enough to conduct business. Those leaving Kingstown should do so late enough to allow for business to be completed and we can return home. The Monday run by the MV Jaden Sun conveniently allows same day visits to St. Vincent from the Southern Grenadines.

Then there is the cost. Return airfare is $460. Return boat fare is $240 by fast ferry and $160 by the others. In most cases overnighting and eating out costs must be considered if accommodation at some relative or friend cannot be arranged. So, when we are invited, think of the implications and do not fail to invite us because of the cost. Give us the opportunity to decide.
