Roadside parking a big problem
EDITOR: Parking of vehicles along the side of the road is fast becoming a critical problem. If one has to take a survey, it would be discovered that on any given evening, there are close to 100 parked by the side of the road, from Montrose right down to Fitz-Hughes. This problem can be very difficult to solve.
Prosecuting the owners, in most cases, would be an injustice, since most of the persons have nowhere to park, except the road and depending on where they live, it is impossible at the present moment to build a garage.
In the case of Barrouallie, just above where the Evangelical Church used to be, there are many vehicles parked along that lane. Of course, most, if not all of the owners of the vehicles live on the hill, where the only access to their homes is a small track. Thus, to prosecute them would be an injustice and the owners, in this case, have no choice but to park there. However, we recognize the dangers that can result from this situation, as only one lane is available to traffic.
I recommend that, in the case of Barrouallie, a diligent search be made for the acquisition of a piece of land near to the homes of the vehicle owners and a parking lot be made available.
In cases where it is possible to have persons build their own driveway in their yard, it must be insisted upon. This particular suggestion would require much care as to how it is done, as it is a very sensitive issue.
Once again, I want to remind the traffic authority to have a pedestrian crossing at the corner of KFC in town. There are far too many instances where people, including tourists, are seen trying to cross over right at KFC. Also the dumping of sand and other building materials in the road for a considerable time can also prove to be a traffic hazard.
Thanks for your time and let us have safety on the road.
