Too much of a good thing can clearly be bad
Editor, The Troumaca Ontario Secondary School on Thursday held a celebration service to mark 45 years of existence. Indeed, what a feat to achieve! Thus, congratulations are in order to the staff and past students who made the celebration a memorable one.
Education is indeed very important. It is a way out of poverty. Being educated gives a certain amount of independence. While there are positives, there are also negatives.
If we observe carefully, there are far too many of our young people becoming lawyers and doctors. While we consider this to be good, there is a problem here. With so many persons becoming lawyers, it makes that profession overcrowded and as a result, many would soon be without employment. This country is far too small to accommodate the number of lawyers that we have and are continuing to have. The same can be said of the doctors.
We may not at this moment have too many doctors, but soon we would have so many that some would be unemployed. It is commendable that our young people can be qualified in their field of choice. For many, just like nurses, they would have to find employment else where. This can lead to a large population of our young people being away and can lead to a brain drain.
It is not the intention of this writer to belittle or discourage any one from their profession of choice. Rather, to encourage our young people to study and become the best they can be. However, there are many fields that we, as a nation, need to develop. We take, for example, forensic science: there is hardly anyone qualified in this field. It is time we have persons working in this field, so as to aid in the solving of crimes.
Another area is persons to operate the dialysis machine. We cannot have the machine and no one to operate it. When that happens it makes the money spent in purchasing such a machine a waste.
Other fields such as mechanical engineering and piloting need to be given some attention, where we have persons going into this area, since there would be very soon persons who can work in this area. I am certain if thought is put into our area of service, we would have a balance in the area of service and development. For, at present there is an imbalance, where one field has too many and some other main areas lack qualified personnel.
More areas can be looked at, but as a developing nation, it is important that we try to develop other areas.
