Unsocial media
EDITOR: The term âunsocial mediaâ was coined by Stephen Joachim, who is conferred with the cognomen âHumanitarianâ for his humanitarian services to Vincentiansâ humanity.
Joachim was co-host on DJ Bing Boom F.M. last Wednesday, November 1, in an interview with former radio personality at 97 F.M. Collin âhitmanâ Graham.
Apparently, Graham has taken up a job with Boom FM and was sharing his âJeremiahâ with the hosts and the national public. The term âunsocial mediaâ came to the fore when the three men agreed that the social media, commonly called Facebook, could do tremendous damage to an individual.
it was then that Mr Joachim said that he preferred to call social media, âunsocialâ, based on the fact that it is anti-social and not uplifting, with Bing and Collin adding that social media could be a savage tool, implying that it is meant to demean and defame people.
In the recent past, I have expatiated on the damage that is done to other people on Facebook. Unfortunately, because we live in a society that glorifies negativity, Facebook would be the right tool to make others feel bad about themselves.
Salacious gossip, unfounded research, misinformation and false news from credulous sources, are usually posted on Facebook.
Since its inception and use here in St Vincent, I have never seen anything of an uplifting nature on other personsâ Facebook pages: nothing mentioned about the progress of local sports in various communities, yarns on the progress of individuals who were once in the mire of hopelessness is ignored, and the significance of infrastructural development in our country means nothing to the users of social media (Facebook).
In conclusion, I now share and support Mr Joachimâs coining of the word âUnsocial Mediaâ. It is very relevant to the reality in the Vincentian community.
