Adult education

EDITOR: Before I get into what I want to write about, congratulations are in order for the traffic branch for placing a “NO UTURN SIGN” at two areas close to the Peace Memorial Hall. Thanks guys… you are doing a great job.

Congratulations are in order to the Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) on their week of activities. Indeed, we recognize that adult education is an important component of the education revolution.

This important component of the education revolution must never be allowed to die. I believe that there are numerous testimonies that can be told of the benefits derived from programmes organized by this department.

It is my humble opinion that enough money is not given to this department and enough attention not placed as well on this all important department. With over 200 facilitators who give their services on a regular basis, I realize that it requires a lot financially and it also says a lot about the willingness of individuals to give of their service in this department.

However, many have been frustrated and in some areas, programmes have ceased and this is due to the lack of support. I know that soon some of the facilitators would not be required by the department and some would decide to leave, which is unfortunate.

I take this opportunity to encourage those in authority to put some resources into this department. It is important that it be kept going and not allowed to die. For in doing so, we are taking many out of poverty and we are paving the way for others to have another chance

of being educated. This not only takes one out of poverty, but also gives a good feeling of accomplishment and lifts their self-esteem. It can be an instrument in the reduction of crime.

Thank you.
