That Argyle Airport at last
Editor: After several failed attempts to honour their promises relative to the commissioning of the services at the Argyle Airport, the word is that the airport is to be opened on February 14 this year. The authorities seem confident that they will meet this new date, for there is a hint that the day is to be declared a public holiday. That is understandable, considering the rather low success ratings that the ULP had over its long life in Parliament.
The list of failed projects is long and has been financially painful for the citizens. In addition to our loss of funds on these failed projects, is the hint of reckless indiscretion and immaturity exhibited relative to the expenditures on the âOttley Hall Inquiryâ, âthe Ju-C building buy-outâ and the neutralizing of the assets of the Banana Growers Association, which the farmers had collectively acquired.
The failed projects which come to mind are the Owia Fishing Complex, the Cross Country Road, the Arnos Vale Call Centre, the Rabacca Resort, the Cassava Factory, the Arrowroot Industry, the Banana Industry and recently the infamous Buccament Bay Resort.
The project for which I had for some time been giving them high marks is the Rabacca Bridge. It has a tremendous impact, especially for people with interests beyond the bridge. I was not happy with the design used, for it seemed not to allow for a great enough flow under the bridge, and I said that time and the river will test that design.
So, if all goes well, the Argyle Airport will become operative on February 14.
It seems a great pity though, that we do not seem to have on our agenda the flying out, via Argyle, of substantial amounts of our food agricultural produce to our friends and brothers in CUBA and VENEZUELA, who have given us tremendous assistance over an extended period in vital areas. They seem to need our assistance now. We should show our gratitude and offer that help with eagerness.
