Remembering sister Patricia Ann Douglas
Sister Pat, as she was affectionately known, served as principal of Marriaqua Secondary School/St Josephâs Convent, Mesopotamia from 1980 to the time of her passing. My last recorded memory of her could be likened to that of a sprinter at the start of a race. She had received the news that a female student at the school gate was in serious difficulty. Sr Pat sprinted to her assistance. Later that evening, she left for Barbados. It was there that tragedy struck.
Sr Pat was a God-fearing, strong, forthright advocate for the fearful, the voiceless, the downtrodden and the disheartened. She is best remembered as the pioneer who offered teen-mothers a second chance to complete their secondary education at the school and spearheaded the Guadeloupe Home for Girls in Marriaqua. Those who knew Sr Pat loved her and appreciated her 25 years of faithful service to nation building. As we observe the 10th anniversary of her passing, we pray that her soul may rest in peace.
