Letter from PMC to PM Gonsalves

Fri Feb 07, 2013

Dear Editor

Letter to PM Gonsalves

Greetings from PMC.

On December 31, 2013, one week after the deadly floods that shocked and shook our nation into deep pain and suffering, a Vincentian in the diaspora, Mr Junior ‘Soca’ Jones penned a letter to Prime Minister Gonsalves and Leader of the Opposition, Mr Arnhim Eustace entitled, ‘An Open Letter to Ralph Gonsalves and Arnhim Eustace’. This was subsequently published on I-Witness News on January 1, 2014.

The letter resonated with and embraced a core tenet of the People’s Movement For Change, that is to say, ‘… the promotion of the principles of JUSTICE, EQUALITY AND FREEDOM …’ which is further expressed in our motto ‘Country Above Self: People Before Politics’.

The PMC met on Saturday, January 4 and, among other things, considered the said letter. One of the decisions which carried was to accede to the request by Soca Jones to have the letter delivered to the political leaders as he had intended. Permission was sought and was given so to do. PMC delivered the letters on Tuesday, January 7 to both Prime Minister Gonsalves and Leader of the Opposition, Mr Arnhim Eustace. On Wednesday, January 8, a media meeting was held to share two other suggestions that were taken at the January 4 meeting:

1. To propose that Prime Minister Gonsalves and Leader of the Opposition consider a bi-partisan approach as a response to the governance of the national disaster

2. To consider a separate entity, like the NMCM, to monitor/observe the distribution process to ensure transparency and equity in the relief distribution and reconstruction.

It has therefore become necessary to share these letters with you for your records and careful attention.
