Scouts’ ban on gays, lesbians represents a bigoted attitude

Tue Feb 04, 2013

Editor: The president of the Scouts Association of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Morrison Baisden, last week was quoted as stating gay and lesbian scout leaders will not be tolerated in the organization.{{more}} This discriminatory ban based on sexual preference exemplifies narrow intolerance. It is a protracted attempt to demonize lesbian, gay and transgender Vincentians based on fallacious perceptions.

It sends the wrong message and will only also further marginalize young lesbian and gay scouts and those wanting to be scouts or scout leaders. The Caribbean Alliance for Equality believes in equality without sanctions and we are against freedom denied, based on sexual orientation. This ban represents a bigoted attitude and it should be removed.
