Ann-Marie Ballantyne, everyone has rights, even homosexuals
Tue Jan 29, 2013
Editor: I refer to a letter by Ann-Marie Ballantyne in last weekendâs issue of Searchlight (25th January). In her letter, Ms Ballantyne chose to remain a supporter of Godâs view on homosexuality and condemned the boldness of Kirk Cambridge for speaking about his life and lifestyle.{{more}}
It would have surprised everyone had it been otherwise. You see, Ms Ballantyne is a director of an ultra-conservative religious sect in SVG, whose mission seems to be the unvarnished support for the death penalty, support for the inalienable rights of the people, as defined by the group, and support for the retention of laws criminalising homosexuality.
The lady is on radio every Tuesday night calling down fire and brimstone on gay people and all who would support them. This she sees as her right in a free, democratic society, and Mr Cambridge will be the first to support her right to freedom of speech and freedom of expression. However, in the same breath, Ms Ballantyne would want to deny Kirk Cambridge the right to talk freely about his life and his right to pursue happiness at no oneâs expense.
I am reminded daily of the words of our grandparents where donkey said that this world ainât level.
