Editor: I read with some interest and a good measure of amusement Bassyâs piece on the above caption which appeared in the Searchlight newspaper of Friday, 4th January, 2013. I would summarize the thrust of Bassyâs piece as follows:{{more}}
âSo, after 60 years Canada is again asking for skilled migrant workers, but we are no better prepared now than we were in 1950 to take up the challenge.â
The idea that the focus of our education and economy should be on technical and vocational skills has been mooted many times since 1950 and has been dismissed as many times as it has been advocated.
Bassyâs piece brings to my mind several expressions:
(1) The local expressions: The boat/bus leave we (we missed the boat/bus)
We spinning top in mud/sh.. .
(2) From the movie âSmokey and the Banditâ
âDaddy all this bullsh.. has got to stop.â
