Editor: The elections are over in the United States and Barack Obama has been re-elected to a second term.

With 270 electoral votes needed to win, he received 332 over Mitt Romney’s 206.

Two recent articles in the “Searchlight” caught my attention and if one was to examine them both, it would not be hard to understand the different mindsets and figure out what went on here on Tuesday, November 6.

In your paper of October 26, Dr Adrian Fraser showed a clear understanding of what the Republican candidate was up to.

A campaign of dishonest and a feeling of entitlement. Romney’s contempt for the American electorate was unbelievable.

It was difficult to determine what he stood for, because with every position that he took, news organizations were able to come up with a video tape showing him saying something to the contrary.

What was most disgusting throughout the campaign was the ease with which he lied on a daily basis.

I often wondered how he could live with himself while showing such disrespect for the American people.

This election should have not been even close.

In the “Searchlight” of November 2, my brother Frank da Silva’s article “An American election – The World Waits” shows why the Republican lost.

This is the type of hatred that drove their campaign and does not belong in today’s politics.

Frank states that any support that he had for President Obama would have gone out the window, once he expressed his support for gay marriage.

The truth is that Frank would never support Obama or any other Democrat, because he is a diehard supporter of what is now called the party of the white male.

I do not support gay marriage, but I understand that our party has a wide tent and that the President’s gesture was simply an invitation to the gay and lesbian community to join us under that tent.

The same thing goes to Latinos, who are constantly treated as subhuman by Republicans, until of course there is an election.

They fail to understand that 50,000 Latinos turn 18 years old every month.

Obama received 73 per cent of the Latino vote, 92 per cent blacks, over 60 per cent of people between the ages of 18 and 29 years and beat Romney by 11 per cent with women, while taking 67 per cent of those who are unmarried.

Republican presidential candidates have seen Latino support slip.

George W. Bush received 44 per cent in 2004, John Mc Cain 31 per cent in 2008 and Mitt Romney 27 per cent in 2012.

In Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan’s home state, Wisconsin, the first openly gay woman, Tammy Baldwin, was elected to the United States Senate.

Frank needs to understand that there is a different kind of electorate out here.

I notice that he did not mention the effort across this country by the Republican party to suppress the vote, yet he mentions Dr Martin Luther King Jr

I must remind my brother that in 1965, when with Dr King present, late President Lyndon Johnson signed the voting rights act, he remarked to a colleague that he had just surrendered the southern states to the Republicans.

To this day those states are still Republican and extremely racist.

Madam Editor, the world waited and we have spoken. Barack Obama will be our President for the next four years.
