Eustace brothers were the founders of ‘Timmy’ School
Editor: In the book âCaribbean Trailblazersâ, it is stated that the Eustace brothers John Parmenus Eustace (J.P.) and Joseph Lambert Eustace (J.L.) founded the Intermediate High School in St Vincent in 1926.{{more}}
They invested their time, effort and resources in the creation of a private, much needed secondary school on the island when the Intermediate High School was born.
This was outside of the existing Boysâ Grammar School and the Girlsâ High School.
In 1926, J. P. Eustace was the first headmaster of the Intermediate High School when he was 21 years old. There were 12 students.
His brother, J. L. Eustace, a teacher at the school, succeeded him as Principal in 1931, when J.P. left the Intermediate School to become a Mathematics teacher at the Boysâ Grammar School.
In 1941, J. L. also went to teach at the Boysâ Grammar School.
About this same time, J. P. Eustace left St Vincent to study for the Doctor of Optometry degree in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. He handed over the running of the school to Bertram âTimmyâ Richards gradually. He returned to St Vincent in 1946 and opened the Emmanuel High School in Kingstown in 1952.
These pioneers in education must be lauded for their foresight and positive contribution.
Thanks to Dr Anne Eustace and Vin Samuel for documenting this information in the above-mentioned publication.
I wish the Intermediate High School former students much success with their upcoming reunion.
Blessings,
Cheryl Phills King
