Open letter to Keith Miller, Commissioner of Police

Tue, Jun 12. 2012

Editor: Policing in St Vincent and the Grenadines is very challenging. When Dr Gonsalves gave Mr Keith Miller the job of Commissioner of Police, he appeared to be a good choice. Mr Miller said in his first speech as Commissioner that he would try his best to deal with crime and criminal activities in St Vincent and the Grenadines.{{more}} I’ve known Mr Miller for quite a long time and my expectations of him was to deliver quality service as Commissioner of Police. Sometimes I wonder if he has been doing that.

I have some questions for Mr Miller: (i) Describe your relationship with the rank and file of the Police Force. (ii) Is the Force order still a part of Police in St Vincent and the Grenadines? (iii) Was the timing of the comment you made about the Health Status (too fat) right? (iv) Would you say you are satisfied with Mr Nichols’ performance as the officer in charge of the Public Relations and Complaint Department? (v) Is the Police Force a reflection of its leadership?

Policing in this country is your responsibility as Commissioner. The management of the Police Force is also your responsibility. When I look at the management, it appears as if you’re having some difficulty.

There is no doubt that you mean well, but something is wrong and as Commissioner you must find a solution.

Mr Miller, comments are being made by persons in the Police Force about your lack of management skills. I’m wondering if that is your problem.

Mr Miller, you are hearing, but you need to spend time listening to the members of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force, that’s according to comments made by members of the Police Force to me.

I have some questions for members of the St Vincent & the Grenadines Police Force: (i) Why are there so many police officers being punished? (ii) Is it fair that some members of the Police Force question Mr Miller’s performance? (iii) Is Mr Miller playing politics while doing his job? (iv) Is Mr Miller’s method of discipline too harsh for some members of the Police Force?

These officers need to comply, do some soul searching, put St Vincent and the Grenadines first, stop complaining and do their job with integrity.
