I’m totally disgusted
27.MAY.11
Editor: It is with extreme disgust and vexation that I write this article. For the longest while now it seems that people in SVG do not know, or fail to acknowledge that Mayreau is a Grenadine island.{{more}}
Even most of our radio announcers who we expect to know these little pieces of history often fail to mention it.
âAbout this time weâll like to big up our listeners in the Grenadines: Union, Canouan, Bequia, Mustique, Palm Island, P.S.V.â
They even reach as far as Grenada. Hello!!! If my memory serves me right, I remember there being 7 Grenadine islands, and the last I checked Mayreau was included.
Calypsoes are sung about the Grenadines and as usual no mention is made of Mayreau; budgets are made and nothing is budgeted for Mayreau; thereâs a Ministry for Grenadines affairs and yet no affairs are being dealt with in/on Mayreau.
And to add even more insult to injury, the Mayreau Regatta and Sporting Committee whilst seeking sponsorship for their 2011 annual regatta was told that money was budgeted for Regatta in the Grenadines, but not MAYREAU, after that particular company has been receiving sponsorship letters for the past 5 years from the said committee. I can highlight many more incidents, but Iâll leave space for another article.
Let me just close by saying that MAYREAU is a Grenadine island. It is in fact the smallest, being 1 1/2 sq miles, with a population of about 300 people. It is anchored between Canouan and Union Island. Your only means of getting to this unspoilt beauty directly is by boat.
No one likes being left out, purposely or otherwise. So next time anyone wants to visit, âhail upâ or budget for the Grenadines, guess what? Yes! MAYREAU IS A GRENADINE ISLAND.
