Plenty of Churches in SVG, but no love

08.APR.11

EDITOR: A report under the caption “Plenty of Churches but no love” appeared on the front page of the Vincentian newspaper of Friday, April 1, 2011, and caught my attention immediately.{{more}}

The report begins as follows: “St. Vincent and the Grenadines is filled with churches, but when it comes to love and care, that is totally lacking.” That’s the view of High Court Judge Gertel Thom.

Now I write to make the following open comments with regard to this subject:-

1. I made a similar comment and came to a similar conclusion at least 50 years ago. SVG is a very religious society but not a very moral society.

2. People in leadership positions in all areas of SVG society must give serious and sober thought and attention to the sociology and social psychology of this society and the direction in which it is going. The present state of SVG society reflects the failure of leadership over the years.

3. In this context, attention must be drawn to the perception of our deceased poet “Shake” Keane that was written on the occasion of the eruption of the La Soufriere Volcano in April 1979 (32 years ago) and is quoted below:-

“…People who have always been going nowhere began arriving nowhere…”
