To our overworked nurses, I say: THANK YOU!

05.APR.11

Editor: Now, some of us who had the opportunity to stay at the hospital here, like myself, would agree that some nurses are heaven-sent and others, I wonder how they got qualified. So those of you would know what I am about to talk about.{{more}}

I thought that we are all entitled to one hour for lunch according to our employment laws. Seems I was wrong; nurses here don’t get their lunch break the majority of the time, yet it is recorded as if they have. I wonder why that is so?

At night, one Registered Nurse works for an entire ward. I thought we have a lot of nurses here. It baffles me that one person has to be on her feet all the time, with no rest. I learned that they are allowed to take two hours rest, but they can’t because of the number of patients to a nurse,. The patients to Registered Nurse ratio should be one to 10 at its maximum. There were 20 + patients, (holy sh..), (I have to use the dot dot like our PM).

I further did some comparisons and learned that our RN nurses here work more than those in other countries. Our system here is old and outdated. RN nurses should not be cleaning our waste and attending to our bed pans; those should be assigned to NA (nurse assistant) or a ward assistant as in other more developed hospitals; but we are stubborn and love our old ways and hate change so we cannot evolve.

So, to our overworked nurses, I say: THANK YOU! And very sorry for your situation; I hope our Government looks into this.
