Where is our pride?
Editor: I listened to the discussions surrounding the statement made by Sir James Mitchell regarding civil servants not being able to bathe before 1984 and I feel that persons read too much into what he was saying. I think that he was trying to say that persons had problems receiving a regular supply of water or none at all, but he simply conveyed it badly. I am sympathetic to him because I think that everything is not in order upstairs.
I do not think that anyone should have been in a position to comment on his statement because no one should have been listening to him in the first place. He had his time and did some things that were beneficial to this country however whatever little good he did was overshadowed by that ugly monstrosity he placed in the heart of town. That poor excuse for a central market, which resulted in the destruction of our beautiful triangle, has severely damaged the aesthetics of Kingstown. However, in so doing, he did achieve his objective, which in my opinion was to spoil the beauty of Kingstown and remove the Cenotaph. I feel ashamed to carry any visitor into Kingstown with that eye sore.
I often hear the saying that persons tend to forget the good and remember the bad, but when that bad, in my opinion, was deliberately done and with bad intentions, it simply cannot be forgotten. How can we as Vincentians allow him sit back and smile thinking that he successfully deceived us?
