PM, stop the borrowing now!
Editor: I am worried about the almost arbitrary and borrowing complex of the Prime Minister, as though he is bent and driven on achieving a name for himself at all cost, without stopping to think of the consequences for our country and people.{{more}}
Editor, long after the PM is dead, our children and grandchildren will be burdened with the debts the PM has amassed, notwithstanding the interest rates. What would this mean for the relations between those country-lenders and our SVG? The PM cannot be Minister of Finance and Doctor of Law and not think judiciously about the economy of our country and the rising needs of our people, particularly more viable and sustainable jobs. Think of the millions already landed into the airport project. Monies borrowed from this one and that one. Monies taken from this source and that source. Monies raised on this income and that income. What are we really witnessing in this country?
The dream to have an International Airport is a noble dream. But this venture has to be economically viable in our country and at the right time. Will we receive the income when this project is complete? Will we not have to spend for massive utility bills, for workers, for the upgrade of the airport? How does this airport juxtapose with our economy and tourism infrastructure so we could truly call it an ideal necessity capable of doing wonders for us?
The three islands that surround us namely St.Lucia, Barbados and Grenada all have an international airport. We should have seen this as a blessing, not to go and get one like them, but to benefit from their airports and save ourselves this unnecessary use of funds which could have gone into bolstering our economy. Furthermore, the area around where the airport is going to be built has to be developed with respect to hotels, shops, taxi services. Will they not suffer the same financial slump that is happening now? Wouldnât those investors be throwing their money into a hole made of concrete with no chance for economic growth? Moreover, the financial returns from the airport, if significant at all, would hardly address the expenditure for the number of years of construction and before the airport becomes an economic reality.
So, Mr. PM, would the view be worth the climb after all of this is finished? And who would be repaying these loans? Is this our legacy? Please tell us the whole truth.
