Let us focus on the children of SVG

11.DEC.09

EDITOR: As I entered my work place, I met a class of pre-schoolers sheltering rain with their teachers and I stopped and had a good look at them. I saw their innocence, and this was soon followed by a sense of pity. I know we are all born with that inner joy which eventually disappears as we become older but it should not be lost entirely.{{more}} I felt the sense of pity because I am well aware of the challenge that lies ahead as they grow up.

The question I then asked myself was, are we doing enough for these kids? I provided the answer for myself and the answer was a certain no.

Every child has the potential to be great, but hardly anyone in our society ever gets to that stage. The problem is that we are not investing enough in our children. If a child can be indoctrinated to become a suicide bomber, why can’t they be indoctrinated to become great? We are all too busy to spend the required time with the children. I know that persons would try to convince me that resources are scarce, but I never accept that excuse. I usually reply that our priorities are bad.

Last Friday the draw was made for the World Cup Finals in South Africa, and I wonder if our politicians ever visualize our youths reaching that far. This should serve as extra motivation to invest in our kids. I know we are a small country with a small population, but more importantly we are small-minded. We are too preoccupied with politics, which only serves to produce more anger and bitterness towards each other.

When we seek to serve at the highest level, it must be out of love for the human spirit and not an opportunity to make money and take advantage of others who are in genuine need of help.

Let us redirect our energy and focus on making our people great. Let us give everyone a chance to develop. We must put politics aside. No one person knows everything. We must always be prepared to listen to others, moreso our children. In all our actions, we may be taking away their joy, but more importantly, we may be taking away their future.
