We are not teenagers anymore

EDITOR: I’m not Vincentian and some may say I don’t have the right to speak on this issue, but I just can’t hold back.

My intention is to let you see that even the non-nationals are seeing Sir James Mitchell, Arnhim Eustace and the lot as not dealing sensibly with this issue.{{more}}

Mitchell is saying that:

30 years is a small period in the life of a country, which I think is bull. Three decades is a long time.

If the present constitution has come about from centuries of thinking and experience, what has he been doing from that time until he ran from his responsibilities as Prime Minister? Not a lot I guess.

If an island is independent, what does that mean? I am not a scholar like you, Sir, but that island should be able to stand on its own.

I am amazed at some of Sir James’ comments.

There is nothing at all about St. Vincent being an independent state, where Sir James is concerned. He never wanted independence for St.Vincent as far back as 1979. You think he will want it now? No way.

“You are going to vote no because Sir James Mitchell said to.”

“Because Sir James doesn’t want anyone touching that document as long as he is alive, not even his party members.” What a shame, Sir James!

Is this Sir James’ personal island?

Sir James’ said the Queen doesn’t interfere with anyone. He got that one right. The Queen doesn’t care about St. Vincent; the Queen has her own stuff to care about.

We need to care about our own stuff, too. This is our country. We have to live by our own rules, not the Queen’s rules. It is high time Sir James that we climb out from under the “colonial wing” to make our decisions as we see fit. We are old enough — we are not teenagers anymore. We are 30 years old.

Can somebody tell me, why would the Government put so much time and money into this constitution and then give the Opposition more money to stop its process? Would this be a wise Government? I guess not.

Is this country so backward? Please don’t tell me yes, because I love St. Vincent, my father’s birthplace.

Mr. Campbell and team, I salute you; it is your duty to campaign for a yes vote.
