Why doesn’t Technical College get scholarships?

19.SEPT.08

Editor: Let me start this letter by thanking the government for their speedy response to the petition of the Lowman’s community. We, however, wish to see some work done so that the Calvary playing field can become a reality.{{more}}

Listening to a press conference on Tuesday, 9th September, 2008, I was impressed by the number of scholarships offered and personally agree with the initiative of the government to send as many of our youths, as it is possible, to university.

On the other hand, it was disappointing to hear the Prime Minister saying that the setting of a higher standard for entry to the college was not one done at an administrative level. It is important to note that the lecturers’ rationale for lifting the bar was based on the fact that persons below this standard, more often than not, either dropped out of the course or failed the final exam.

Too often good initiatives are pushed aside because of political red tape. I personally feel that the lecturers’ initiative, although not done at an administrative level, should have been supported at the policy level of “getting the small things right.”

In closing, I would like to know what is the accreditation given to the courses done at the Technical College, in terms of University entry requirements, and why scholarships are not given to the top performers from the Technical College to pursue studies at University.
