ULP on a roll

15.AUG.08

Editor: Six months ago, the opposition NDP and assorted Ralph-haters were foolishly writing the political obituaries of Ralph and the ULP amidst salacious allegations against Ralph. The NDP and the Ralph-haters whipped themselves into a frenzy. Now, it is the NDP and its leadership who are in crisis, and the ULP is riding high on a roll.{{more}}

Comrade Ralph met the allegations against him with a firm and quiet dignity. He got on with his job as Prime Minister. He and his government kept their focus. After his initial statements on the allegations in early February, he allowed his lawyers to do the talking on them in and out of the Law Courts.

Over the past six months, the Government has continued and stepped up its public sector programmes. The Education, Housing and Wellness Revolutions continue apace. A series of foreign policy initiatives have been bearing fruit. A massive assault has been made against the Drug Barons, Money Launderers and Violent Criminals. The jet airport of Canouan was opened and the Argyle International Airport has formally started. The Comrade has been making headline-grabbing speeches, including one on the OECS Union and CARICOM. Work in Parliament continued despite the foolish boycott by the Opposition. National plans on food and energy were unveiled.

Politically, the ULP has picked up pace. In February 2008, it launched its own radio station STAR-FM; it held three huge rallies including one on March 28th to celebrate its seventh year in office; the representatives are articulating their positions more successful nationally; and the organs of the Party appear to be functioning. (Still, the reps need to do more work on the ground). And young blood, including Sabota Caesar, is being advanced in the Party and Government.

No wonder the NDP and its leadership are panicking. They are even contemplating the return of Sir James who, even his friends admit, has been having too many “senior moments” to be taken seriously.

Sincerely yours,
Joanne Buchanan
