Tribute to Anthony Gunn

12.OCT.07

Editor:

Anthony epitomised the evolution of aristocracy in the West Indies, incorporating a beautiful blend of colonial forebears, humble and noble in his bearing, his words and his deeds. He stood out physically because

of his more than average height and good looks, and also because of his calm, warm, welcoming demeanour, always charming and willing, a laugh and a sense of humour, an ability to enjoy himself in true West Indian style favouring the sea and booze; but for all of his joie de vivre and always being there to help and lend a hand, he seemed alone in truth, private inspite of being visible, and popular, and liked and loved by all who met him. Gentile is my favourite word for persons like this.{{more}}

His was a persona that one attaches to a bygone era, polite and discreet. He wore a suit beautifully, dressed impeccably, had a very active entrepreneurial spirit, and was always gracious as gracious can be. A fine representative of our island and indeed the West Indies, which he embraced and sought to promote at every opportunity. He had a generous spirit.

It really is hard to envisage him dead, no longer. He wrapped himself around so many fields of endeavour. He fought to have his very own communication system, remember? Cariaccess. He helped with the family hotel business, a computer wiz, electrically and technically minded. What a huge, breathtaking loss. Devastating.
