Technical Institutes Promote Hands-On Training Amid Participation Concerns

Other than the Division of Technical/Vocational Education of the St Vincent and the Grenadines

Community College (SVGCC), there are five technical Institutes located in various areas of mainland St Vincent that offer several skills training opportunities.

A central one is the Kingstown Technical Institute located close to Bishop College.

This Institute offers four programmes: Food preparation and cookery, plumbing, electrical, and office procedures, all to the level of the Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ), a competency-based certification.

However, when speaking with teachers, there is a general sense that the Institute is underutilised.

CVQ standards are approved by the Caribbean Community ( CARICOM) allowing for easy movement across the region.
