Speak up, and speak out, says ACP Bailey
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) with responsibility for fighting crime in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), Trevor “Buju” Bailey says that it is important to assess the pattern, speak honestly about the risk, and decide what must change when it comes to violence among youths, especially in schools.
The senior policeman’s words came on the heels of several reports of violence involving youths which landed them before the court.
ACP Bailey, speaking during a consultation which was held to look at the issue of school violence, said that in recent months, a number of troubling incidents involving students have forced the authorities to take a closer look at what is happening in and around schools across the nation.
“They have disturbed, unsettled and raised difficult questions across the country, and when violence begins to show itself more openly among young people, responsible institution must do more than react.
“…from a policing standpoint, school violence cannot be treated as an isolated incident. When we examine this situation, we are not looking at fights or isolated acts of defiance. We look at what surrounds it,” ACP Bailey noted, while adding that the authorities must look at the escalation, and consider whether the behaviour is becoming more organized, more public, and more retaliatory and resistant to ordinary correction.
