Only Israel benefitting from war on Iran, says Opposition Leader
Leader of the Opposition, Dr Ralph Gonsalves has called for a de-escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. He made the call during his regular programme on Star Radio on Wednesday morning, March 18, 2026.
Dr. Gonsalves projected that if the conflict continues for a further 6-8 months, it will be “hell in the world”, including here in St Vincent and the Grenadines and other Caribbean states.
With food prices already increasing locally, Dr. Gonsalves added that there would be other increases on items such as electricity, as a result of the war.
He said that the economy will slow down and that “we are going to have what you call stagflation”.
This is where prices will be increasing while the economy remains stagnant.
In calling for a de-escalation of the war, Dr. Gonsalves said the conflict must come to an end.
“This conflict is not benefitting anybody except Israel,” he stated. On February 28, 2026, the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran in which Iran’s Supreme Leader and several senior officials in the Iran administration were killed. As part of its retaliation, Iran has blocked the passage of large number of ships carrying crude oil from traversing the Strait of Hormuz, and have damaged some of these oil tankers resulting in a sharp increase of a barrel of oil.
As Israel and the US have kept up the military attack on Iran, with President Donald Trump insisting that Iran totally surrenders. The new Iranian leader has vowed not to yield, and has extended its on against states in the region which host US military bases.
