RRU Station Sergeant completes Elite DEA training
Station Sergeant Nigel John, of the Rapid Response Unit (RRU) in the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (SVGPF), recently completed the DEA Illicit Synthetic Drug Trends course, an intensive 40-hour programme hosted at the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in El Salvador from February 23 to 27, 2026. The constabulary said in a release that Station Sgt John returned home with specialized knowledge on the growing threat posed by synthetic narcotics across the region.
The training focused on the fast-changing world of synthetic narcotics. Unlike traditional drugs tied to crops and harvests, synthetic substances are manufactured in laboratories and can be altered quickly, allowing criminal networks to stay ahead of conventional controls, the RSVGPF explained.
During the programme, participants examined the growing range of synthetic opioids, stimulants, cannabinoids and other new psychoactive substances appearing
in illicit markets. The course also explored how minor chemical adjustments are used to disguise dangerous substances, the types of precursor chemicals involved in production, and the small-scale laboratory setups capable of generating large quantities of illicit drugs.
It said attention was also given to the financial side of synthetic drug trafficking. Participants reviewed investigative approaches used to trace illicit proceeds and disrupt the financial networks that support drug operations.
Synthetic drugs present serious risks not only to communities but also to first responders, the RSVGPS stressed.
Because some of these substances are extremely potent, the training emphasized strict safety procedures and the proper use of personal protective equipment when handling suspected materials.
With Station Sergeant John back on the ground, the RSVGPS said the Rapid Response Unit is further strengthened in its ability to recognize emerging drug threats and respond effectively should synthetic substances appear within these shores.
“The certification adds another layer of expertise to the Force’s ongoing effort to stay ahead of evolving criminal trends and protect communities across Saint Vincent and the Grenadines,” the police release stated further. The RSVGPF has congratulated Station Sergeant John on the successful completion of this training, and extended best wishes as he continues to apply the knowledge gained in service to the people of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
