Intervention planned to combat poor Math results in schools
THE NEW government in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), is on a mission to change how Mathematics is taught, with the hope of getting better results from students in this subject area.
In his 2026 Budget address on Monday, February 9, 2026, Prime Minister Dr. Godwin Friday said the pass rate in maths “remains critically low.”
“Weak numeracy undermines readiness for technical and scientific careers,” the prime minister noted with concern.
In seeking to address this problem at its root, he said the government will be moving away from traditional teaching methods to early specialist intervention in Maths.
This will see the government deploying specialist maths teachers across the State. Dr Friday explained that this will be done at the primary level, from Grade K to Grade 6.
The aim is that this intervention will “ensure strong fundamental learning, at the point where it matters most”.
