Geothermal wells may be capped by new government
WELLS WHICH WERE dug in the northern part of mainland St Vincent as part of a geothermal project under the ULP administration, are now said to be emitting steam and gases.
In his 2026 Budget address on Monday, February 9, 2026, Prime Minister Dr. Godwin Friday said this situation with the wells is “creating a potential public safety and environmental risk”.
The SVG Geothermal Project was established in 2019 by the previous administration. It was done in conjunction with the Reykjavik Geothermal Company Reykjavik with the aim of extracting 15 megawatts of geothermal energy from wells dug on the slopes of La soufriere volcano.
