Gonsalves may not attend Parliament today over security issues
OPPOSITION LEADER Dr. Ralph Gonsalves’ current security arrangement may be a main issue in the veteran politician not attending the first sitting of the 12th Parliament today, December 23, 2025.
This sitting of the House of Assembly is the first since the New Democratic Party (NDP) formed government after its 14-1 win in the November, 27 2025 general elections.
The sitting, at the temporary Parliament Building at Glen, will see the swearing in of members of the House of Assembly, and is expected to see a heavy turnout of NDP supporters welcoming the new administration to the House for the first time.
The former prime minister seems to be avoiding any likelihood of another episode like that of August 5, 2021, when, as then prime minister Gonsalves was struck on his head around 5.15 p.m. when a protest on the streets of Kingstown escalated outside the parliament building.
