Teachers mark 50 years of historic 1975 strike
Friday, November 14, 2025 teachers across St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) gathered for their annual march and rally as they commemorated ‘teargas Friday’, 50 years after what is considered a most notorious event occurred.
Organised by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Teacher’s Union (SVGTU), the march and rally was one of the activities to mark Teachers Solidarity Week held under the theme: Celebrating 50 years of courage, Dedication and Pride in the Struggles of 1975. The march and rally keeps in memory the November 14, 1975 events when teachers, students, and sympathisers engaging in a peaceful march over better working conditions, low salaries, poor working conditions, and the absence of a collective agreement were tear gassed by the police on the orders of the government of the day.
“The honour is appreciated to bring this message in my capacity as the President of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Teacher’s Union on the auspicious occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the historic struggles of 1995”, SVGTU President, Oswald Robinson said at the rally held on the grounds of Bishop’s College, Kingstown.
