No barrier against another possible Rock Gutter tragedy, says Shevern John
Ten years after the accident that claimed the lives of seven persons at Rock Gutter, in the North Windward Constituency, the New Democratic Party’s candidate for the constituency is crying shame on the government for not doing anything to increase the safety of persons commuting along that area.
In January 2015, seven persons died in a horrific accident, when a mini van in which they were travelling out of Fancy, ran off the road and plunged into the stormy sea at Rock Gutter.
The bodies of two secondary school students who perished in the accident, were never recovered.
The New Democratic Party (NDP) held a village meeting in Fancy last Monday evening at which Shevern John spoke, and expressed concern about the danger which still exists at Rock Gutter.
She said 10 years have passed, the danger remains, but there are still no road barriers at Rock Gutter. “What a shame.”
The former school teacher also expressed concern about the lack of street lighting along the road to Fancy.
“From Owia to Fancy dark like pitch,” she stated, adding that the darkness of the area is a security risk for persons travelling in and out of the area at night.
John who served as an opposition senator in the last Parliament, promised that street lights will be installed between Owia and Fancy, should the NDP form government after the November 27, 2025 general elections.
Villagers in Fancy were also promised that the NDP would put life into agriculture in their community.
“This election, we will cut dependency loose,” she declared.
John said following the general elections a successful NDP will “bring back the days of feeling pride and dignity”.
She said the people of Fancy will be empowered, because they will be working to earn their own income.
She expressed confidence that the people of St Vincent and the Grenadines will be delivered on November 27, “because God does not allow evil to rule a nation forever.”
“On the 27th, we sending them home, we sending them into retirement,” John declared.
