Huggins claims Sir Louis wanted to recruit him
A candidate for the opposition New Democratic Party claims that he was at one time, next in line to succeed Sir Louis Straker in the Central Leeward constituency.
NDP candidate, Conroy Huggins, made this claim on Sunday night,November 15, 2025 when he addressed an NDP meeting in Barrouallie, in Central Leeward.
Last September, Huggins was chosen as the NDP’s candidate to contest the Central Leeward seat against the incumbent, Dr Orando Brewester of the Unity Labour Party (ULP).
“Since 2001, Straker identified me as his protege.”
The first time candidate said this means that he was the person to replace Straker, who also served as Deputy Prime Minister in the ULP administration.
The former educator however stated that the NDP is the “movement for change, and that is why I came forward.”
“Since then, I have been highlighting the neglect of the community, which all of you know.”
Huggins said he began working on the ground immediately after being selected by the NDP as their candidate for Central Leeward.
He insisted that his presence hastened the ULP to start working in the constituency, particularly to undertake road repairs, so much so, that several roads in Central Leeward are now nearing completion.
Huggins is confident that even if the ULP fixes all the roads in Central Leeward, it does not matter “we are going to vote them out”.
General elections will be held in St Vincent and the Grenadines on Thursday November 27, 2025, and Huggins urged voters in Central Leeward to go out and vote early because “ we can’t afford to miss this opportunity”.
“We will be better with NDP,” he insisted.
