World Paediatrics do life-changing surgeries on 17 children at MCMH this week
This week saw 17 children from across the Eastern Caribbean (EC) and Barbados receive life altering surgeries that mark the beginning of new chapters in their lives, thanks to World Paediatrics (WP) and the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH).
The visiting WP medical team, comprised among others, of paediatric urologist, Dr. Douglas Coplen; anaesthesiologist, Dr. Thomas Bohannon; and nurse Joanna Thomeczek from St. Louis, Missouri, worked alongside several local medical professionals to carry out a week of complex reconstructive surgeries. The patients, all children, presented with a range of conditions.
Dr. Coplen, who has been volunteering in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) for almost a decade, said the mission focused on children with conditions such as blocked kidneys, abnormal bladders, spina bifida-related complications, undescended testicles, and hypospadias (a condition where the penis does not form normally).
“We saw 40 patients in clinic and performed surgery on 17 children,” Dr. Coplen said, while noting that for many of these children, the procedures has completely changed their quality of life, restoring normal function and giving them confidence.
