Court grants father’s request for jail time for his son
A father’s request was granted when his son, who had pointed a gun at him, was imprisoned.
Simon Simmons appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate, Tammika McKenzie, on September,22,2025 where he was sentenced for assaulting his father on December,8,2024 at Sharpes Dale, causing actual bodily harm.
Simmons had pleaded not guilty to the offence, but was convicted by the court. The prosecution argued that Simon and Handell were about 20 feet apart when Simon told his father, “my rifle them don’t stick ana”.
The court was also told that Simon took out what appeared to be a gun, cranked it, and pointed it directly towards his father who was approximately three feet from him at the time and said, “I shooting yuh, I killing yuh,” causing Handell to be fearful for his life.
Simon then slapped his father, and the both of them started to swing their hands at each other. This resulted in Simon hitting Handell to the right side of his head.
When the senior magistrate asked Handell what justice would look like for him, he responded, “Leh he go spend a time…leh he sit down and realise way he do”.
