Cervical cancer initiative launched in SVG
Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can be prevented and even eliminated, provided that countries strengthen their vaccination, screening, and treatment efforts said Dr. Taralene Malcolm.
Dr. Malcolm, the Pan American Health Organization’s (PAHO) and the World Health Organization’s advisor for Non-Communicable Diseases and Mental Health, made the point while delivering the opening remarks at the launch of this country’s cervical cancer elimination initiative at the Methodist Church Hall in Kingstown.
Congratulating St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) for taking the step in the regional and global fight to eliminate cervical cancer, Dr. Malcolm said the introduction of HPV testing as a primary screening method represents a transformational step.
This allows for earlier, more accurate detection and ensures women receive treatment before cancer develops.
Highlighting the WHO’s global strategy, Dr. Malcolm said the three pillars of elimination are vaccinating girls aged 9–14 against HPV; providing regular HPV screening for women aged 30 to 59; and guaranteeing timely treatment for those with pre-cancerous or cancerous conditions.
She noted that HPV vaccination is safe, effective, and already showing dramatic results in countries with high coverage rates.
