Sandals to invest more than US$ 375 million in new project in SVG
THE GOVERNMENT, working with several state entities, is modernizing St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) with projects in areas ranging from the energy sector to housing.
That was made clear by Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves when he spoke at the launch of the St Vincent Electricity Services Limited’ (VINLEC) new smart meter initiative on August 11, 2025 at the Methodist Church Hall, Kingstown. Dr Gonsalves underlined several efforts that point to this modernization, but noted that while the administration pushes forward, there are opportunities as well as challenges.
He pointed out that a few years ago, this country’s geothermal exploration project was not successful although it was confirmed that there is a geothermal resource here, so the possibility exists that this project can be revisited.
The Prime Minister said it was confirmed that the country’s geothermal capacity is around 200 degrees, but the rock at the project site was “insufficiently permeable” to generate the required energy for an economic enterprise. He noted though, that there is new technology available, and the government can now see whether the geothermal project can be revisited.
