KCCU to reopen today following fatal shooting

Normal business operations at the main branch of the Kingstown Cooperative Credit Union (KCCU) was interrupted on Wednesday, July, 9, 2025 when a fatal shooting occurred inside the financial institution.

Following an extended closure due to the climax of VincyMas, a packed KCCU, located on Granby Street, was forced to close its doors just after midday when an altercation between an on-duty security guard and a male customer, resulted in the customer being shot once in the chest; he died.

When SEARCHLIGHT visited the location on Wednesday, the police had cordoned off the street and were conducting investigations.

A KCCU customer who was inside at the time of the incident explained to SEARCHLIGHT that the deceased, 47-year-old Shernard Gloster while standing in the customer service line, made an attempt to switch over to the teller line which led to the security guard reprimanding him.

An argument ensued between the two and the guard attempted to physically remove Gloster from the line which caused the argument to escalate further. The guard then allegedly accosted Gloster, pushing him into the foyer of the building which resulted in a scuffle, and Gloster was shot.

The eyewitness described the incident as shocking and said it was an unnecessary use of force by the security guard.

“That wasn’t necessary. Imagine his family home waiting on him to come back.”

The KCCU released a statement dated July, 10, extending condolences and expressing sadness at the loss of life.

The credit union said in the statement that counselling has been offered for staff and other affected persons.

A subsequent notice from the institution stated that normal business hours would resume today, Friday, July 11, 2025.
