Twenty-one Housing Lots identified on Union Island for displaced Residents
Minister of Housing, Orando Brewster, said in Parliament on Monday, June 23, 2025, that 21 housing lots have been identified on Union Island to help settle residents who were displaced by Hurricane Beryl.
He added, however, that while progress has been made to date, challenges are still being addressed in the Southern Grenadines following passage of the hurricane on July, 1, 2024.
Brewster confirmed that funding was allocated in the supplementary budget following the storm’s passage, both for the purchase of lands ,and the erection of prefabricated homes to support displaced families; but while efforts have advanced across the other affected islands, Union Island remains the most challenging in terms of land availability and housing recovery.
He said as well that surveying and planning for the 12 lots is currently taking place, and should be completed within two weeks, after which the lands will be handed over to the Ministry of Housing for development. The first shipment of prefabricated homes, sourced from Trinidad and Tobago, is scheduled to arrive this week, with the Southern Grenadines prioritized in the distribution.
Minister Brewster also provided some context on the shelter situation, noting that as of Monday, June 23, only 151 individuals remained in public shelters nationwide. He noted that this number does not include persons being temporarily housed in other accommodation such as guest houses.
