Soroptimist International SVG Celebrate World Environment Day
Soroptimist International St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SISVG)said it successfully executed a series of impactful initiatives under the global theme “Combating Plastic Pollution” in observance of World Environment Day observed globally on June, 5, each year.
The events were designed to raise awareness about environmental sustainability, promote recycling habits, and empower both youth and community members to take action against plastic waste, the organisation said in a release.
On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, SISVG hosted an engaging educational session at the Kingstown Government School, reaching students from Kindergarten to Grade 5. This was led by environmentalist, Dr Reynold Murray, a former school principal, who delivered a dynamic talk on the effects of plastic pollution and the importance of individual responsibility. This was followed by a Q&A segment, with students receiving small tokens for correct answers, making the learning process both fun and memorable.
As part of the initiative, SISVG donated a recycling bin specifically for plastic drinking containers to the school. The bin, branded with the SISVG logo and the universal recycling symbol, was generously sponsored by SVG Tyre Sales & Services, and marked a tangible step toward fostering good recycling habits within the school community.
The outreach to the Kingstown Government School formed part of a wider week of activities organized by SISVG’s Programme Action Committee that also saw the organisation on Tuesday, June, 2025, conducting a community engagement session in Diamond, aimed at raising awareness and building community support for environmental initiatives.
The activities culminated on Thursday, June 5, with the planting of 60 trees at Diamond Beach, done in collaboration with the General Employers Cooperative Credit Union Ltd (GECCU), and the GEF 7 Project through the Sustainable Development Unit. The event also served as a tribute to GECCU’s 60th Anniversary, with a commemorative sign erected on site displaying the logos of all partner entities.
SISVG said the activities reinforced its ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, education, and community empowerment.
