National Lotteries Authority revenue showing upward trend
THE NATIONAL Lotteries Authority (NLA), the entity established to promote sports and culture, and also channels profits to support education and health care, is already $4.8 million ahead in revenue compared to the similar period in 2024.
Speaking at an NLA press conference last week from their Paul’s Avenue headquarters General Manager McGregor Sealey, said over the last five years, the NLA’s contribution to the country has been significant.
He told members of the media that in 2020, sales were $80,006,637; in 2021 it rose to $84,271,365. In 2022, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, sales were $92,022,456; while in 2023, revenues fell to $89,685,831, and fell further to $87,495,413 in 2024.
“Let me say that from 2001, our sales rose from $15 million then to these figures now, and our sales so far this year for the 3D, which is our major revenue earner, is $34,349,184.
“Our Lotto, $983,584; the Super Six $1,177,404; Play 4 $28,835,069,” Sealey said as he gave an overview of performance.
“Our scratch game is just over one million-1,077,000; INSTA cash, $715,000… “So, as I speak to you now… our sales, as recorded to March 31st, is $64,137,703,” Sealey stated.
“What has happened this year is that we are already $4.8 million ahead on last year’s sales. So, the National Lottery, we continue to do well in spite of those two years when we had a slump in sales. We hope that this year we are going to do better. And again, I want to thank the general public for all the support…,” Sealey said at the press briefing.
He, however, noted that he does not want people to get the impression that the NLA, “has all this money”.
Giving a rundown of where the NLA’s money goes, Sealey revealed that for every dollar spent on the 3D, 10% goes back to the people who provide the software and everything needed for the lotto games to function.
“… ten cents goes to them as their commission. Six cents goes to the people who sell the game- our agents, and 60 cents is prizes. So, every dollar spent on 3D, 76 cents has already been spent. So, we only get 24 cents on that,” Sealey outlined.
“For the lotto, same thing. Ten percent goes to the suppliers. Eight is commission, and 50 cents is prize money. The Play 4, maybe that’s why it’s going so well, it’s 10%, eight, and 60.
