Fisherman of the Year title up for grabs on June 9

Fisherfolk across the country are being urged to come out in their numbers to support this year’s Fisherman Day activities.

The official launch was held on Monday, May 12, 2025 at the Ministry of Agriculture headquarters and this year’s celebration will mark the 48th anniversary of the maritime event which is usually observed on Whit Monday.

The aim for fishers competing in the day’s activities is to capture the coveted title of Fisherman of the Year, and newly appointed Chairman of the Fisherman’s Day Committee, Davyeon Muckette called on all fishers and stakeholders to participate in the event to make it a success.

He disclosed that the competition on June 9 will take place in the usual Class One and Class Two categories. The Class One prize is a Four Stroke 60-horsepower engine, and for the Class Two, Two Stroke, 40 horsepower engine.

“We will have a special one week competition for the beach seine fishing, and it will commence on Monday [June] second to Friday [June] sixth. The prize will be given, which will be a 30-horsepower Two Stroke engine.”

Minister of Agriculture, Saboto Caesar, in his remarks at the launch noted that the fishing industry in St Vincent and the Grenadines has been and continues to be under tremendous strain due to worsening climate events, the passage of Hurricane Beryl which destroyed almost all of the marine vessels in the Southern Grenadines, and most recently, trade tariffs imposed by the US.
