Government launches GYVE programme targetting Youths
A NEW PROGRAMME in which the government is targetting youth volunteerism across St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), was launched on Monday, May 12, 2025 at the Methodist Church Hall.
The Greater Youth Volunteerism Engagement (GYVE) programme, is aimed at encouraging young Vincentians to engage in volunteer activities through community projects.
The programme has received an EC$1.5 million investment from the government, and is supported by the Government of Taiwan. It is open to groups of individuals aged 19 to 35, consisting of 6 to 15 members who have identified and proposed hands-on solutions to community challenges.
The audience at the launch consisted mostly of young people who were shown a video illustrating how the initiative would work. Cleaning up public spaces, offering after-school tutoring, and organising sports tournaments were among the highlighted potential projects that the government would finance through the Treasury Department.
The project coordinator is the former Director of the St.Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, Nigel Scott, who also made brief remarks and reflected on his experience with the Boy Scouts and their involvement in volunteer activities. Scott recounted how, in those days, they would go around their communities to find individuals in need of assistance, such as yard work.
“In turn, the homeowner of that particular piece of land would make a donation to the Boy Scouts,” Scott recounted.
