VINLEC commended for ‘heroic work’ in Southern Grenadines

THE ST VINCENT Electricity Services,VINLEC has been commended for doing “heroic work” in restoring power to parts of the Southern Grenadines which suffered severe damage due to the passage of Hurricane Beryl on July 1, 2024. Speaking on NBC radio on Wednesday, September,11,2024,Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves praised Vinlec for it’s heroic work in the Southern Grenadines.

He also praised the work of the private companies and regional electricity workers on the ground.

Gonsalves said that by the end of this year, electricity should be fully restored in Union Island.

Already he said, “the entire Canouan and Mayreau have been electrified”.

This means that electricity is now available in all parts of these two islands. So far, 300 houses in Canouan, and 31 houses in Mayreau have had their electricity restored.

Electricity was lost in the Southern Grenadines after hurricane powered winds, uprooted electricity poles, downed power lines, and severely damaged the electricity network. Members of the Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC), and more recently, teams from Cuba,have arrived in St Vincent and the Grenadines to bolster the VINLEC workforce in the restoration of electric power to residents in the affected islands.
