ULP leader urges supporters to participate in events leading up to the National Convention

AS THE RULING Unity Labour Party (ULP) prepares to hold its National Convention at the end of this month, Political Leader Dr Ralph Gonsalves is urging all party supporters to participate in all activities leading up to the event.

The ULP’s Convention will be held on Sunday, July 31 at the Campden Park Secondary School.

Speaking on Star Radio on Tuesday July 12, Gonsalves reminded members to get involved in constituency meetings and constituency conferences.

The Political Leader said he does not anticipate “ there will be any contestation” for the re-election of a political leader and chairman of the party.

“Similarly, I don’t think there is going to be any contestation for the position of deputy political leader and deputy chairperson.”

In April, Gonsalves had said that the July 31 convention would see the election of a deputy political leader for the ULP.

That position was last held by Sir Louis Straker.

Straker was also the Member of Parliament for the constituency of Central Leeward.

Straker did not contest the 2020 general elections, but the ULP retained the Central Leeward seat with the victory of Orando Brewster at the polls.

In June, Gonsalves had told SEARCHLIGHT that the only vacancy in the party is the post of deputy political leader.

He had also stated the likelihood of only one candidate being put forward at the convention.

Gonsalves who is now in his 54th year of political activism, said on Tuesday that the ULP has a vision for St Vincent and the Grenadines.

He said the focus of the Convention is “to strengthen our party and to build our nation.”

The prime minister added that the ULP is “vital for the building of this nation, and for its continued transformation”.

“Anybody who hasn’t seen that is completely blind.”
