Majority of the locals infected with COVID-19 are female

Most of local persons infected with COVID-19 in St Vincent and the Grenadines are female.

This is according to a report presented by epidemiologist, Tamara Bobb, during a Ministry of Health press conference this week.

Bobb’s presentation focused only on the cases recorded with no recent travel history.

As at Tuesday, January 26, 47 per cent of local COVID-19 cases were female while 35 per cent of the cases were male.

“We still have 18 per cent for which we cannot identify the gender and so we will update that as time goes by,” the epidemiologist said. “Most persons who become infected are between the ages of 25 to 44 years old. That’s about 37.5 per cent of all cases with no travel history are in the 25 to 44 years age group.”

Bobb noted that almost 13 per cent of the cases were in the 15 to 24 years old age group while almost 12 per cent were recorded to be in the 45 to 54 years old age group.

The presentation showed that cases have been recorded in all age groups.

Over 50 per cent of local cases reside in three of the nine health districts in SVG; the Calliaqua, Pembroke and Georgetown health districts.

It had been reported last week that the majority of local COVID-19 cases lived in the Pembroke health district.

But the epidemiologist’s presentation this week showed a slight shift, with the majority of cases – 20.1 per cent – being recorded in the Calliaqua health district, which ranges from Arnos Vale to the Stubbs area.

Approximately 19 per cent of the cases live in the Pembroke health district, which spans from Campden Park to Barrouallie, while 16 per cent live in the Georgetown health district, which spans from Georgetown to Fancy.

Bobb said however, that cases are present in all health districts and that persons should continue to take the necessary precautions wherever they go. She also said regular updates will be provided, once more information is received.

More COVID-19 cases have been recorded in SVG since Bobb’s presentation on Tuesday.

As at Wednesday evening, a total of 827 cases had been recorded in SVG, 651 of which remain active. Exactly 686 cases, which have been recorded in persons with no recent travel history also remain under investigation.
